Totally Kids Specialty Healthcare is a small pediatric sub-acute hospital with 45 patients. We are the ONLY long-term care hospital dedicated entirely to children. Our residents' ages range from newborn to 21 years of age and we are dedicated to enriching the health and quality of life for our kids. We are always striving to meet the medical, developmental, social, psychological, and spiritual needs of our kids. Job Title: Director of Education

Position Description:
The Director of Education is responsible for management and coordination of all educational programs and training activities. Assists facility employees in defining, meeting, and evaluating their educational goals and objectives.

Reporting Relationships: Reports to Director of Nursing

Duties Summary:
Administrative Management:
Planning:
  • Formulates the policies and philosophy of the Education Department consistent with the goals of the facility.
  • Develops, plans, and coordinates education programs in accordance with needs assessment.
  • Interacts with Administration regarding long range planning and prepares a budget to meet the objectives of the Education Department.
  • Develops annual objectives for nursing education preliminary to budget planning.
  • Plans annual budget in accordance with established directives.
  • Plans educational programs and schedules for each calendar year.
  • Participates in the formulation and revision of nursing department policies and procedures.
  • Plans for and promotes economical use of departmental supplies.
  • Plans training programs to meet educational needs of the organization.
  • Plans and directs the development and presentation of programs that meet the requirements of the Board of Registered Nurses for Continuing Education Units.
  • Plans educational programs that meet the requirements of the LVN Board for State Certification in I.V. Therapy and Blood Withdrawal.
  • Assures that objectives are planned for each educational activity.
  • Plan for ongoing and outcome evaluation of programs and methodologies.
  • Plans and develops a system to assure current certification of nursing service personnel to perform specific procedures.
Leading:
  • Gives direction to establishing and maintaining good interdepartmental and community relationships.
  • Provides for a systematic method of recruiting and selecting instructional / clinical personnel.
  • Collaborates with instructors and clinicians in developing and revising performance standards.
  • Develops a system to assure coordination of instruction on all shifts.
  • Assigns instructors so as to maximize the utilization of individual competencies.
  • Promotes professional attitudes, behaviors, and accountability.
Organizing:
  • Delegates areas or responsibilities in departmental assignments and schedules.
  • Develops and maintains an administrative manual which illustrates and explains departmental organization, philosophy, and programs.
  • Coordinates and implements effective facility education activities by working closely with administration, Nursing Administration, Department Heads, and instructors.
  • Organizes the incorporation of Fire Plan, Disaster Plans, Bod Mechanics, and CPR Plans into the facility wide educational programs.
Controlling:
  • Reviews position description and performance standards with departmental personnel annually.
  • Takes corrective action to rectify variances from established standards.
  • Maintains the established budget within an acceptable range of variation.
  • Develops and maintains an effective record keeping and reporting system of:
    • Personnel attendance at education programs.
    • Certifications required by the Nursing Department.
    • Appropriate statistical data.
Administrative Functions:
  • Keeps currently advised for relevant and realistic program by:
    • Conferring with departmental leadership persons to meet identified needs.
    • Attending appropriate committees.
    • Interviews with representative nursing staff.
    • Interaction with community educational systems.
    • Communication from resident population / family.
    • Review of related literature.
  • Interacts with Administration to encourage participation and involvement of all personnel in education programs.
  • Supervises the procurement and maintenance of educational materials (films, tapes, books, equipment, etc.).
  • Has current knowledge of state registrations and prepares forms and reports for the RN and LVN Boards regarding courses offering Continuing Education Units and State Certifications.
  • Supervises accurate documentation of all classes and education activities, both in-house and out of house.
  • Participates in the interviewing, hiring, promotional, and disciplinary process of Education Department employees.
  • Completes employee performance evaluations as per established facility policy.
  • Coordinates all the instructional activities.
  • Serves on committees as assigned.
  • Responsible for the budget of the Education Department.

General and Professional Performance:
  • Fulfills responsibility to the organization by adhering to philosophy and general policy.
    • Fulfills attendance requirements.
    • Adheres to dress code.
    • Maintains current Basic Life Support certification.
    • Maintains current Pediatric Advanced Life Support certification.
    • Attends required facility safety programs.
  • Acts as an advocate in providing a safe delivery of care to promote wholeness.
    • Meets venipuncture requirements as per Totally Kids.
    • Manages prescribed care of medications and I.V.’s when needed.
    • Performs procedures and techniques according to established Totally Kids policies and guidelines.
    • Provides a safe environment by:
      • Maintaining own physical health and mental alertness.
      • Operating selected equipment correctly.
      • Labeling and reporting defective or malfunctioning equipment.
      • Utilizing measures to prevent infection according to Totally Kids policies and guidelines.
  • Maintains and expands knowledge base by:
    • Participating in continuing education programs in area of responsibility.
    • Participating in appropriate educational organizations.
    • Developing and updating own education/management skills.
  • Utilizes sound management principles and delegates responsibilities effectively.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of and ability to implement principles of adult education.
  • Uses appropriate interview techniques in the selection of new personnel.
  • Maintains an effective communication system within and outside of the education department.
  • Attends education programs and keeps knowledge of clinical nursing and education current.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

Education/Training: Licensed as an RN in the State of California, B.S. in Nursing, with a Masters degree preferred.

Experience: Minimum of 2 years prior experience as an educator in a pediatric setting, either acute care or long term care.

License: Current RN license in the State of California.

Certifications: CPR and PALS certification.

Physical Requirements:
  • Reading, writing and verbal skills.
  • Lifting requirements: Generally not lifting or carrying objects that weigh greater than 30 pounds.
  • Must be able to discern colors.
  • Physical skills necessary to operate equipment:
    • Must be able to stand, reach in all directions, lift and carry objects.
    • Must have fine motor skills.
    • Must have 20/20 vision (correction devices allowed) and be able to appropriately read patient information, posted materials and other written information.
    • Must hear (correctional devices allowed) and comprehend well enough to give and receive information for appropriate completion of duties.
    • Must be able to speak, read, write and listen in English with a skill level essential for communication in a sub-acute facility.
    • Must have normal physical stamina.
    • Must be able to perform chest compressions and hand resuscitator ventilations during CPR.
    • Must be able to push or pull equipment weighing up to 100 pounds.
    • Must be able to bend and twist.
    • Must have full use of both hands.
    • Must be able to walk intermittently, six to ten hours per shift.
    • Ability to concentrate, use good judgment and maintain accuracy in the face of frequent interruptions and heavy workload.

Patient / Age Specific Contact:
Able to oversee a program of appropriate services as they are particularly applied to pediatric and adolescent chronically ill patients.

Knowledge should include but not be limited to the following:
  • Technique of delivery of clinical therapeutic & restorative modalities according to age.
  • Age specific disease processes including pathophysiology.
  • Growth and development of Education specific to life stage relating to diagnosis and condition.

Category of Risk for Bloodborne Pathogens Exposure:
Category I- High Risk: Job classification in which health care workers have the highest risk of occupational exposure to Bloodborne Pathogens.

Ability to use Equipment:
Knowledge and skills necessary to obtain and use appropriate equipment related to the various services performed in this facility and provide appropriate documentation including fax, phones, copiers.

Clinical Competencies:
  • Assessing:

    • Develops and implements a system of evaluating teaching and learning activities.
    • Evaluates books, A.V. programs and other educational resources to assure maintenance of relevant and current teaching aids.
    • Evaluates the performance of instructors and clinicians in relation to the established performance standards and counsels appropriately.
